  DRILL BOX       Average (Word) Length and Syllabic Intensity
The drills above contain many long words. Have you noticed that a line of long words is more difficult to type than a line of short words? To capture this difficulty, we introduce the concept of Average (Word) Length (AL). The higher the number, the more difficult it is to type the text. The AL of Post-test and Pre-test was 5.25, the AL of Drills was 7.06.
Typically, the difficulty of typed text is measured by its Syllabic Intensity (SI). Syllabic Intensity counts the number of syllables per word. However, the number of syllables in a word can often be misleading. Consider for example a 2-syllable 9-character word "earthquake" and 4-syllable 7-character word "unusual". Which one is more difficult to type? Moreover, spelling of words with "long syllables" is usually more complicated which adds to the difficulty of typing. That's why we decided to use AL instead of SI to measure the difficulty of typed text. Just for your information, the SI of Post-test was 1.62 and SI of Drills was 2.13.
